IPTV buffering on iPhone, iPad or Mac: what helps

A spinning wheel in the middle of a match is the worst. Here's where buffering usually comes from, and what you can do about each cause.

Where buffering comes from

An IPTV stream travels from your provider's server, across the internet, through your network, to the player. Buffering means the picture isn't arriving as fast as it plays. Most of the time the cause is the provider's server, especially at busy moments like a big match. Your own network comes second. The player matters least, as long as it doesn't add delays of its own.

What to try, in order

  1. Try another channel. If other channels play smoothly, the problem is that channel's source at your provider, not your device or network.
  2. Check your stream limit. Many accounts allow one or two streams at a time. A second device playing, or an app left open, can make streams stall or stop. Close them.
  3. Get closer to the Wi-Fi. Move nearer the router, use its 5 GHz network if it has one, or try mobile data to compare. A weak signal is the most common cause on the home side.
  4. Try with and without a VPN. A VPN can slow a stream down, or speed it up if your internet provider throttles video. Test both ways.
  5. Restart the router if everything on your network feels slow, not just IPTV.
  6. Ask your provider. If buffering happens on every channel, at the same times, on every device, the provider's server is overloaded. Only they can fix that.

What Yagi does about it

  • It reconnects by itself. When a stream stalls, Yagi reconnects on its own and keeps trying, and tells you what it's doing instead of leaving a frozen picture.
  • It adds no delay of its own. Live TV plays close to where your provider's stream is, and LIVE takes you to the newest picture.
  • Pausing gives you a cushion. Yagi keeps the stream coming while live TV is paused. On a shaky connection, pausing for a few seconds gives you some picture in hand, a little behind live.
  • Downloads don't buffer. For movies and episodes your provider offers to download, download them first and watch them under Available Offline.

Questions

Why does IPTV buffer only during big matches?

Everyone on your provider's server is watching at once, and the server can't keep up. It's the provider's capacity, not your device.

Does a faster internet plan fix buffering?

Only if your own connection is the bottleneck. Most streams need far less than a typical home connection; a weak Wi-Fi signal or a busy server is more often the cause.

Is buffering worse on iPhone than on a TV box?

Not by itself. A phone on weak Wi-Fi does worse than a box on a cable, though. Try the same channel on both in the same spot to compare.
